The School of General Studies was established by the Senate and Governing Council of Federal University of Agriculture, Umudike now Micheal Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike in line with the enabling laws that established the University in 1993. It was designed to meet the requirements and demand of the National University Commission (NUC) for broadening of the students intellectual capabilities. It was also designed to serve as an introductory platform for students who do not have required background in Social Sciences and Humanities as discipline or those students who are not pursuing studies in these areas to acquire fundamental knowledge about the methodologies, concepts, paradigms and orientation in social science and Humanities.
The School attained College status following Senate approval at its 164th Regular meeting held on 5th February, 2015 for change of nomenclature from School of General Studies to College of General and Communication Studies (CGCS) and empowered to establish degree awarding programmes.
Consequently, in line with the University of Agriculture decree No. 48 of the 1992, Schedule 2, Deanship election was held on Thursday, 18th June, 2015, Professor N.O. Oke emerged as the pioneer Dean of the College. This was followed by the election of Rev. Fr. Dr. Mike Ukah, a Senior Lecturer (Philosophy & Logic), as the Deputy Dean of the College on 4th August, 2015.
