Research Breakthrough

Some of the research breakthroughsin the College include

  1. Genetic improvement of local chickens and incorporation of adaptability genes to exotic broiler stock.
  2. Development of artificial vegina for collecting rabbit semen.
  3. Establishment of a model for assessing relative preference of forages in range ruminants.
  4. Identification, nutritive and medicinal evaluation of browse plants of Umudike and its environs.
Other achievements include
  1. Development of alternative feed resources from neglected root tubers, agricultural and industrial by-products hitherto regarded as wastes.
  2. Production of life-enzymes and fine chemicals from wastes of animals/feed (Bio-resources).
  3. Establishment of baseline bochemical and haematological data for West-African Dwarf goat.
The College graduated her pioneering students (7) in 1997/98 Academic session; produced a first class graduate in the 1998/1999 academic session (who is currently undergoing a doctorial training in Edinburg UK); and as of today, about 200 students has so far graduated from the College.
The College boasts of dedicated and versatile academic staff which include 4 Professors, 3 Associate Professors, 6 Senior Lecturers and 7 up-coming academics (4 of which have Ph.Ds).
The College is made of 3 Departments:
  1. The Department of Animal Nutrition and Forage Sciences.
  2. The Department of Animal Production and Management.
  3. The Department of Animal Breeding and Physiology.
These Departments have flourishing Postgraduate programmes with students at the PGD, M.Sc. and PhD levels.
One of the College’s main research outputs is the development of a disease-resistant hybrid chicken shown in the attached picture.
