College of Natural Resources and Environmental Management (CNREM)

The College of Natural Resources and Environmental Management, Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike is a Centre for training and excellence, creativity and innovation in Forestry, Natural Resources Conservation, Fisheries and Environmental Management. The training offered is aimed at maximizing capability for self-employment and entrepreneurship in food and fibre as well as in environmental conservation and management. Training is accessible to Nigerians, Africans and, indeed, the rest of the world. Towards this goal, the College sensitzes and mobilizes the rural communities, especially in Southeastern Nigeria, to ensure adequate management and productivity of Forest, Fisheries and other Environmental Resources on a sustained yield basis.

The objectives of the College of Natural Resources and Environmental Management of the University include:

  • the development of appropriate units of exellence in Forestry, Fisheries, Aquatic and other natural resources as well as environmental conservation and management;
  • production of sound and innovative graduates, who can make major breakthroughs capable of transforming the economy and the unfriendly environment of the nation, thereby enhancing the quality of life for our people;
  • the training of students for self-employment enterpreneurship, academics, public and private sector empoyment;
  • optimal utilization of available resources and facilities;
  • encouragement and advancement of learning in functional, sustainable forestry, fisheries, natural resources and environmental management to all interested persons without any discrimination;
  • encouragement of income generation for the College through consultancy and other services;
  • Thorough and effective research and extension in forestry, fisheries, natural resources and environmental management according to local, national and internation needs.

In the College we offer two Undergraduate Degree Programmes:

  • Bachelor of Forestry and Environmental Management, and
  • Bachelor of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Management.

The College has facilities to support its programmes and services which include:

  • Relic Humid Forest protected since 1927,
  • Multipurpose Nurseries;
  • Fish Farms;
  • Food Tree and Timber Plantations;
  • Fish Hatcheries;
  • Apiculture and Snailry Facilities;
  • Herbarium;
  • Ornamental Gardens;
  • Envronmental Quality Assessment Laboratory;
  • Wildlife Domestication Unit;
  • Research Laboratories,
  • Wood workshop,
  • etc.

We provide teaching, research and consultancy services in the following areas:

  • Biodiversity Conservation and Management;
  • Timber Plantation Development and Management;
  • Watershed Conservation and Management;
  • Snailry and Apiculture;
  • Environmental Protection and Enviromental Impact Assessment;
  • Ornamental Plant production technology;
  • Herbarium Management and Plant Identification;
  • Aquatic Management and Development.
