Some Achievements of the University

In spite of the relatively young age, the University has recorded some remarkable achievements.

Student’s enrollment has continued to increase from year-to-year. The University started with 82 students in 1994 spread over 6 Colleges. Currently, the University has a total of 7006 students in 9 Colleges, the PGS and a Continuing Education Centre. There 4216 undergraduates, 638 Postgraduates and 2152 students in the Continuing Education Centre.

  • The University has graduated ten sets of graduands. To produce high quality graduates, the University has recruited highly qualified academics. Currently, MOUAU has 277 academic staff, made up of 50 Professors and Associate Professors, 57 Senior Lecturers and other cadre of academic staff.
  • In the area of ICT development, the university has succeeded in establishing a robust and standard ICT resource centre to serve the ICT needs of the South-East and South-South geopolitical zones of Nigeria. In 2006, there were a total of 106 Computer units in the University community. Today, there are 1,400 system units in the University excluding the students own.
  • Consequently, .the University has established a launching pad for a project that will install telecentre services to engage groups of populations (women and restive youths) not reached by today’s ICT services in learning activities; through facilitating access to relevant information and learning resource. This project is aimed at addressing the marginalisation of women and restiveness of youths in this Niger Delta zone of Nigeria.
  • In the area of research and development, the University has developed some technologies that would boost food and fibre production in Nigeria. In this regard, a mushroom production technology has been developed and very soon it will be produced in commercial quantities.
  • Palm wine is now bottled and sold to members of the public.
  • Cowpea that hitherto, was not produced in most parts of the South-Eastern Nigeria has now been introduced and its production popularized among farmers in Abia State.
  • Some wildlife species like grass-cutters and monitor lizards have been successfully domesticated.
  • The University has also established about 1,000 hectares of land for oil palm plantation and to establish an oil palm mill.
  • The University publishes the Journal of Sustainable Agriculture and Environment. It is a bi-annual international journal. This is in addition to several other publications including the publication of the Farming Systems of the University’s mandate zone (the Southeastern Agroecological zone comprising the South-East and South-South geopolitical zone of Nigeria funded by the US Embassy in Nigeria.
