One of the enviable and elite culture of the MOUAU academic empire is the Family Meeting which holds as and when due. The 9th of December 2016 witnessed a worthwhile Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Umudike family meeting experience, which also doubled as the last for the year .Held at the anyim pius auditorium,and successfully chaired by the vice chancellor of the Institutution,Prof  Francis Otunta, who joyfully thanked God for the life of all staff and students of MOUAU who have made it through January to December and prayed that no one would be found missing ,come January 2017.

while the VC wished staff and students the blessing and favour inherent in the celebration and season ,he regretted that staff will not part for the celebrations with gift as was envisaged .He however craved their understanding as it was better to have their salaries paid in full than for them to receive gifts ,following the economic recession being experienced in the country .Furthermore ,Prof. Francis Otuta Cautioned Extension Staff to be at beck and call while  the university is on break as the institution must be seen  to be active and not deserted come 23rd December when staff will be having a break to celebrate the season

Foremost on the VC’s speech was the need for staff members particularly, the heads of Departments and units to remember to make for themselves good names and endeavor to leave positive footprints in the sand of time. These he said can be achieved through dedication to the ethics of the civil service and core values of the institution. He encouraged cordial relationship between heads and their subordinates and the operation of open door policy as staff cannot function well if they are unaware of the policy practiced and true situation of the university.

The Vice chancellor appreciated the Heads of the 21 programmes that faced accreditation as feedbacks were majorly positives and there was adequate management of limited resources .He however regretted that efforts geared towards retaining some departments proved abortive as the university has been asked to go back to its core mandates .Therefore ,the university has been compelled to redistribute students to other departments .Affected departments  which no longer exist presently include ;mass communication ,philosophy and peace and conflict resolution.

The worthwhile suggestions made during the meeting include

  • The adoption of a sanitation day for the university, suggested and agreed upon to hold on first and third Wednesdays of every months
  • Every member of staff and students to henceforth put on identity card for the proper identification during official hours.
