BRIEF PROFILE:

Prof. Nneoma Obasi started her career as a Graduate Assistant in 1999 at the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, from where she rose to the rank of Professor in 2018.

Prof. Nneoma Obasi studied at the Federal Government Girls College Owerri, Nigeria, and then at the Federal University of Technology Owerri, where she obtained a BSc and a PhD in Food Science and Technology. Her MSc. was completed from Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Nigeria. She also has a PGD in Theology from the Redeemed Bible College, Lagos.

FUNCTIONS

The Office of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) coordinates and collaborates with other key academic and administrative leaders, such as the Registrar, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Director of Academic Planning, Director of University Advancement, Deans of College, Heads of Department, Director of Academic Affairs, Director of Senate Affairs, etc. to achieve the academic objectives of the University. 

As Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Prof. Nneoma Obasi oversees academic activities and assists the Vice-Chancellor in the management of all academic matters of the University. He is responsible for oversight of all academic policies, direction, programmes and the services that support them on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor.

In this regard, the core functions of the Office of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) include: 

  1. Interfacing with the University’s Admissions Board for admission of students, following laid down admission criteria; 
  2. Interfacing with the Directorate of Academic Planning, Deans of College and Heads of Department for curriculum development. This entails introduction, verification and accreditation of programmes; 
  3. Ensuring smooth delivery of teaching and conduct of examinations, by interfacing with the Senate’s Examination and Time Table Committee (ETTC);
  4. The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) chairs the Senate Special Committee on Consideration of Results, which considers and approves students’ semester results;
  5. The DVC (Academic) also considers and approves students’ degree results on behalf of Senate;
  6. The DVC (Academic) chairs the Senate Committee on Public Lectures which organises public lectures in the University, including Inaugural, Convocation, Distinguished, Valedictory lectures.
  7. The DVC (Academic) also chairs the University Ceremonials Committee which organises Convocation Ceremonies;
  8. On the directive of the Vice-Chancellor, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) chairs the University Appraisal Committee for the assessment of non-professorial academic staff;
  9. The DVC Academic conducts election of Deans of Colleges;
  10. The DVC (Academic) interfaces with external corporate bodies with relevance to academic activities for the benefit of the University. Such bodies include: the Federal Scholarship Board, Rural Electrification Agency (REA), Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), SAHEL Consulting Agriculture and Nutrition Ltd., INDORAMA Petrochemicals, etc.
  11. The DVC (Academic) acts on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor and performs other duties as may from time to time be assigned by the Vice-Chancellor.
