Management Information System Unit

The Management Information System (MIS) Unit was setup to carry the following basic functions within the Directorate of ICT and the University as a whole:

  • To develop and maintain the University Website
  • To develop new software Application and Maintain existing software for the University
  • To design and develop relational database systems and their web interfaces.
  • To help in generating college web contents for our Learning Management System
  • Recommend and implement new technology solutions to improve productivity.
  • To assist in creating systems and implementing website development and data access across college.
  • Develop and implement MIS policies to ensure data accuracy and security.
  • Provide support with maintenance of the college’s computerized management information systems including data entry, data checking and report production.
  • To support in the development and enhancement of college systems, databases, and portals using web standards.
  • To support the in-house college registration system, providing timely attendance information to staff and support services.
  • To take part in training and supervising members of staff involved in data entry into the college’s computerized information systems.
  • Perform periodic maintenance and servicing of MIS system to improve operational efficiency.
Functions of the MIS Unit includes:
  • Web Operations: involves the deployment, operation, maintenance, tuning, and repair of web-based applications and systems.
  • Data Capturing: includes collecting data and entering than directly into computer systems.
  • Processing Data: organizing, processing, checking and cleaning of data to produce meaningful information.
  • Data Analysis: involves calculation and interpretation of data
  • Data Reporting: includes publication and dissemination of information.
  • Software Application Development: Development and maintenance of Software

Network Management Unit

The Network Management Unit was setup to carry the following basic functions within the Directorate of ICT and the University as a whole.

1. Designing and planning the university network
  • Fiber Optics cabling of the campus remote locations
  • Campus wide Intranet networking
  • Videoconferencing implementation across the campus
  • CCTV Surveillance camera installations
2. Setting up the university network
  • configuring the network
  • installing the hardware that makes up the physical part of the network,
  • Configuring the files or databases, hosts, routers, and network configuration servers.
3. Maintaining the university network
  • Develop and deploy methodologies for testing network performance and providing network performance statistics and report.
  • Design and deploy enterprise-class wireless networks, including access points, servers, routers switches and other hardware.
  • Manage and ensure optimal operation of all network and equipment

Maintenance Unit

Directorate of ICT: Computer Maintenance& Facility Unit

Technical support and service for all issues related to the operation of your Desktop, Laptop and Macintosh computer, iPad, and peripheral devices connected to your computer.

This service is available for

All Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike; University staff in Colleges, Departments, Units, school laboratories,libraries, teaching and common use spaces, and general offices.

Our Service Includes:
  • Technical support for your desktop software and hardware (including printers), when you are having issues
  • Custom image and software configurations for libraries, teaching and common use and school laboratories
  • Re-imaging of computers to restore default configurations
  • User-specific configurations of Windows/Macintosh/Linux computing environment to enable connectivity to services
  • Routine maintenance services including patches, fixes, virus updates, BIOS updates to ensure compatibility with Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike applications
  • Run repairs and maintenance of computer systems and peripherals for faculties, departments and units on the campuses.
  • The unit also runs installation and configuration for crash softwares.
  • The unit maintains and services the Directorates generator and power backups of the data room.
File Recovery
  • Virus, spyware and malware scanning and removal
  • Support for computers located in the MOUAU E-Test Centre, ICT Resource Centre e.t.c.

Home support for Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike Executive members

  • Relocation of computer equipment
  • Other technical troubleshooting where necessary

Training Unit

The Training Unit was created to coordinate all ICT training activities in the Directorate and University at large. The training has been categorized into two: University-wide training (non-profit making) and Professional training (profit-making). These training categories serve their purpose adequately. The Training Unit has trained not fewer than Twenty Thousand (20000) final year graduating students since its inception. More so, not fewer than Eight Hundred (800) staff of the University—both teaching and non-teaching—have been given one IT skill or another at different times.

One of the mandate upon the shoulders of the Training Unit is profit making for the Directorate and to enable her make a reasonable Return on Investment (ROI).We have embarked on aggressive marketing of our training products on several ICT disciplines; such as Database Administration, Networking Administration, Web Development, IT Essentials and Software development. As at now several trainings are going on in the Unit such as Oracle 11g Database Administration, CISCO Networking Academy, Web Design, PHP, MySQL and Computer Appreciation.

The Unit for a couple of years have trained every student of the University in a mandatory ICT course tagged Universal Mandatory IT Training (UMITT), and we have never ceased receiving great testimonies about our graduate from employers. This UMITT exercise is usually finalized with a One-day workshop tagged “CaTalk” –a career seminar that has been designed to guide graduating students on how to prepare a salable resume that will wow their target employer, and how to excel in interviews, and beat the rigors of the labor market.

As part of our efforts to deliver our social responsibilities to the University community and host communities, the Unit’s arms are ever open to accept and render every available help to all SIWES students seeking industrial attachment with the Directorate. They are free to apply and learn from the wealth of experiences in the Unit and other units of the Directorate.

The duties of the Training Unit can be summarized as follows
  • Coordinate ICT training activities in Directorate and University at large
  • Develop training curriculum for the various training product
  • Ensure quality and standard ICT training delivery in the Directorate and University

  • Planning, scheduling and delivery of UMITT
  • Planning and execution of CaTalk workshop etc.

Support Unit

Brief Description of ICT Support Unit

As ICT support unit we provide technical support and assistance for users of computer

infrastructure and web technologies through the followings ways:

  • Enter commands, using computer terminal, and activate controls on computer
  • and peripheral equipment to integrate and operate equipment.
  • Deal with the day to day issues of maintaining a trouble free environment for
  • effective use of ICT equipment.
  • Providing support to staff and students to overcome any difficulties they may be
  • experiencing e.g. printer failure, poor pc performance, etc.
  • Monitor the system for equipment failure or errors in performance.
  • Notify supervisor or computer maintenance technicians of equipment
  • malfunctions.
  • Maintains client confidence and protects operations by keeping information
  • confidential.
  • Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.
  • Supervise and train peripheral equipment operators and computer operator
  • trainees.
  • Resolves user problems by answering questions and requests
  • Update the Senior Network Manager of any potential/serious issues or problems
  • that need attention.
  • Perform daily checks on all ICT equipment to ensure it is in acceptable working
  • order.
  • Maintain computer peripheral equipment such as scanners, printers, smart
  • boards, and projectors; ensure that these are prepared and ready to be used.
  • Attend meetings when required.
  • Undertake training as required to enable work to be carried out to a high
  • standard.
  • We provide support services such as student online registration, checking of
  • results online, printing of works for staff, students and other customers, e-mail,
  • web browsing, advertising, publications, announcements, networking with various
  • social media.
